Spotting the Difference: Authentic vs. Reproduction
In a market flooded with reproductions, knowing how to identify authentic vintage furniture is a valuable skill. Whether you're browsing a flea market or shopping online, there are several tell-tale signs to look for.
Labels and Markings
The most obvious sign of authenticity is a manufacturer's label or stamp. Look for tags under the seat of a chair, inside a drawer, or on the back of a cabinet. Famous makers like Herman Miller, Knoll, and Fritz Hansen almost always marked their pieces.
Materials and Construction
Vintage furniture was built to last. Check the quality of the materials. Solid wood, high-quality veneers, and sturdy joinery (like dovetail joints) are indicators of age and quality. Modern reproductions often use particleboard and cheaper hardware.
Patina and Wear
Authentic vintage pieces will show signs of age. Look for a natural patina on the wood, slight wear on the corners, or softening of leather. While damage isn't desirable, a piece that looks "too new" might be a reproduction.
